Virginia Vacation 09

On June26th we packed up the mini van and the 7 of us headed off for Virginia. We drove to Fredrickburg VA. It took a lot longer than it should have. We got stuck in DC traffic and at one point made it 5 miles in one hour. We just kept watching the GPS say you have an hour to go... we would drive an hour and it would still say you have a hour to go. We got in late that evening just in time for a nasty thunder storm. We were lucky enough to stay at a friends parents home while they were away. On Sat. morning we got up and drove towards DC and then took the subway the rest of the way. We spent the first half of the day sight seeing DC. We saw the Washington Monument, Lincoln's Memorial, Jefferson Memorial, WWII Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, the White House.... then we decided to stop by the BBQ Festival for lunch. Well we were having so much fun we spent the rest of our afternoon there. We had lunch (lots of free samples), the girls played many rounds of Knock Out (basketball) Sara came in first place and Allison 2nd place, we did baseball pitching (the girls each won two ticket to the Orioles baseball game, we tried all kinds of activities that were set up. That evening Tom took Michael and Benjamin to the Orioles vs. Nationals game (the girls gave the boys their tickets) Mom, the girls, and Daniel went shopping in Baltimore and to the Cheesecake Factory for dinner. We ended up getting back at 1:30 in the morning. On Sunday we got up and drove to Williamsburg VA. We just hung out at our time share and swam. On Monday we got up and headed over to VA Beach. The kids had a great time playing in the waves and sand. Daniel was so funny, he took a while to take to the sand... then he would tip toe towards the water... as soon as the waves started to come he would scream and run away as fast as he could. We did some shopping, and went out for pizza. On Tuesday we decided to stay close by. We hung out and swam, went to Yankee Candle (the four oldest kids) made wax moldings of their hands. We went shopping at the outlet mall and celebrated Allsison's birthday dinner. On Wednesday we went to Busch Gardens. We rode water rides, roller coasters, had lunch with Sesame Street characters (which Daniel was scared of)watched fireworks, and had a great day. On Thursday we ventured back to VA. Beach. We decided to try para sailing. It was so cool! We all 7 went out on the boat. They let Sara and Allison try driving the boat. The girls were harnessed first and taken to 1200 feet in the air. It was a blast. The best part is when they would bring us back in and dip us in the ocean and then take us back up. When we came in then the boys went up. After para sailing we went back to the beach where the kids tried out their new boogie boards. While swimming we saw dolphins swimming not far from us. We then met up with friends for dinner. We headed back home on Friday. What a great vacation!

Lori, I was stalking your blog to see what a difference a year makes, and then got sidetracked with your vacation to DC :) We lived in DC for four years, before moving down to NC (my husband is in the Army) and we have very fond memories of DC :) I'm so glad we were fortunate enough to live there for a time and explore such a rich historical part of our nation over many years! But... I had to laugh at your traffic story-- I do NOT miss the traffic!!!!

Okay, now I want to see what a difference a year makes-- I'm so stalking all of you who have gone before us!
Much love,
Shari
